OpenAI has announced data residency in India, Japan, Singapore and South Korea for ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and its API platform to meet the respective countries’ local data sovereignty requirements when using OpenAI products.
The data residency allows enterprise and education customers store their content locally. Features under this residency include advanced encryption techniques for data confidentiality and integrity during storage and transmission.
OpenAI also said that it will not train its models on customer data from ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, or API customers unless a customer allows the company to do so by an opt-in feature. It also stated that the company is compliant with various data protection laws like the UK’s GDPR, although it did not mention India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act.
OpenAI also provides Data Processing Addendum (DPA) that clarifies roles and responsibilities of a company under GDPR and other privacy regulations, to meet compliance obligations.
