Retailers in the country garnered 8 per cent increase in sales in June year-on-year driven by categories such as apparel and sports goods, as per the latest survey released by the Retailers Association of India (RAI). This reflects improvement in consumer sentiment after retailers witnessed muted sales growth in the earlier months this year. Categories such as apparel and footwear witnessed stronger growth in June than previous months. Retailers are now banking on August festivities for higher growth.

“Retail sales grew by 7 per cent in May and 8 per cent in June, following nearly a year of 4–5 per cent year-on-year growth. The festive season begins at the end of August, which may influence how demand evolves. Retailers have a sharp focus on the way consumers are buying non-discretionary goods. Non-discretionary spending creates hope for the consumption market,” said Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of RAI.

Regional data show that West India recorded the highest year-on-year growth at 10 per cent. North India recorded a 9 per cent rise followed by South and East India showing a growth of 7 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively.

In terms of categories, apparel and clothing and sports goods garnered a growth of 10 per cent each in the month of June this year compared to same period in 2024. Meanwhile, consumer durables & electronics; jewellery and QSR grew by 9 per cent each during this period. Furniture and furnishing category sales grew 8 per cent. While footwear and food & grocery categories grew by 7 per cent each. Beauty and wellness category sales were up 6 per cent in June compared to same period last year.
