The Chennai airport operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) lost the third position to the neighbouring, privately run Bengaluru airport in international passenger handling in the June 2025 quarter. In the same quarter last year, Chennai was ahead of Bengaluru, and in the third position and has now slipped to fourth spot.
In the first quarter of this fiscal, Bengaluru (BIAL) handled 17.33 lakh passengers, a 29 per cent growth over the same quarter last year. This was the highest growth rate among all the major airports. Delhi continues to be the top international passenger airport with Mumbai in the second spot. Kochi continues to be in the fifth spot, but Hyderabad airport is fast catching up.
Experts say that Chennai airport continues to feel the strain in international connections when compared with Bengaluru. A number of passengers are travelling to Bengaluru from Chennai for international connections due to inadequate connectivity from Chennai, said sources.
